Question:
What is the requirement of chlorine for newly installed water mains? What are the chlorine residual requirements?
Answer:
Before being placed into service, all new mains and repaired portions of, or extensions to existing mains shall be chlorinated so that the initial chlorine residual is not less than 50 mg/L and that a chlorine residual of not less than 25 mg/L remains in the water after standing 24 hours in the main. A chlorine residual of less than 1 mg/L is required for two consecutive 24 hour samples following acceptable chlorinations.
