Question:

Can I burn yard debris in North Charleston?
Answer:

North Charleston residents may burn yard debris provided it is natural vegetation only. This includes leaves and small branches. You may not burn any finished lumber or any other type of debris or trash. If you are burning a pile of yard debris, the pile must be three feet or less in height and less than two feet in diameter. It must also be a minimum distance of 30 feet from a structure. The fire can only be lit with someone in attendance and a water source or minimum of 4A fire extinguisher available to extinguish the fire if necessary. There is a prohibition against creating a nuisance. Section 307.1.1 of the International Fire Code 2006 edition (IFC 2006) states that if open burning that is offensive or objectionable because of smoke or odor emissions or when atmospheric conditions or local circumstances make such fires hazardous shall be prohibited. Atmospheric conditions are monitored by the State Forestry Service. When a Red Flag is issued all open burning is prohibited. When the smoke or smell of smoke is offensive to the neighbors, the fire will be extinguished.
